A new Story

In loving memory of my grandmother who passed away peacefully at home in the morning of March 12, 2012 with her son Roy and daughter-in-law Anna by her side. She was 95 years old. Born March 12, 1917 on a farm in Lowell, Nebraska She was the 7th of 10 children born to William John and Ida Mae Gorsuch Eastwood. She always carried with her the wonderful memories of her loving family and strength from being able to make do. She graduated from Stapleton Consolidated Grade School in 1932 with an award for excellence in Spelling. Times were hard and despite severe homesickness she worked as a live-in mother’s helper. She recalled the joy of riding home on the mail truck each Sunday to be with her family. She married Roy Rentfro on April 6, 1935. Together they managed a Gambles Store, farmed and carried a mail route. Roy junior was born December 19, 1936 and the family moved to Bushnell. Roy senior passed away on July 3 1939 in a Kimball Hospital. Carrying the mail route alone the following Winter proved difficult and she had to take in a boarder to make ends meet. She married Thomas E. Petersen February 8, 1941. After several unsuccessful years farming in Nebraska the young family made the move to California. Tommy had worked in the salt flats near Hayward and in the Hunt’s Cannery in the past. They moved to Meek Avenue and a son Dean was born January 13, 1945. Ethel initially walked to work at Margaret Burnham’s Candy Store and later learned to be a seamstress in an upholstery shop in town. The love of sewing continued throughout her life. Tommy initially returned to work in the California salt flats and later went on to own and operate Mitchell Company on Cloud Way. It was a successful tool and die business that was considered a critical occupation during WWII. On April 21, 1968 Ethel married Everett Franklin Stone a WWII veteran and Engineer. They enjoyed gardening, dancing, the neighborhood church and volunteering for the Salvation Army. Ethel continued to work in the upholstery business at a number of shops in the Bay Area. After Everett’s retirement they commuted to Oakdale to help her son Dean with his Hawke Duster’s Crop Dusting business. At the age of 85 she learned to sew airplane covers for ultra light airplanes. They returned to Hayward in July of 1997. Eventually due to declining health the Stones sold their home on Meek Ave leaving behind many life long friends and moved to Murphy’s to be closer to her son Roy. She enjoyed her time in Murphy’s and made many new friends on Surrey Lane. As Everett’s health continued to decline they decided to move to Davis, California in 2003. Everett loved to sit on the porch and watch the kids come and go to Patwin school. Ethel loved the beautiful fields outside of town and was interested in what was being planted. It made her feel good to see the land being put to good use. She was always a strong supporter of the farmer. Ethel was also appreciative of the help and friendship the neighbors of Olympic Drive. Her home was important to her and she always wanted to have a place for family and friends. She was grateful to the people who helped make this possible. Ethel is survived by her son Roy and Anna Petersen of Murphys, son Dean Petersen of Lockeford, grandsons Dean Petersen of Pleasanton and Jesse of Washington and granddaughter and son- in- law Kim Petersen and Tom Robinson and great grand children Josh and Kayla Robinson of Davis. Her brother Bill “June” and Irene Eastwood of Anselmo, NE, many nieces and nephews who she was always happy to hear from and visit and numerous friends young and old in Hayward, Oakdale, Modesto, Murphys and Davis.
